Raku Firing Night with Jason Fong
The unique process of raku merges the potter's skills with the spontaneity of fire and melted glass. The pieces are heated quickly to 1900 degrees then pulled from the kiln glowing orange. Immediately the glaze crackles with air contact. The pot is then placed into a chamber with a combustible material. As the paper ignites, a lid is closed onto the chamber, smothering the fire. The result is a carbon black body and black crackle throughout the white glaze. Illusive copper red lusters and bright color highlight the pieces. Join this firing night and experience raku for yourself. Bring 5 - 6 bisque fired pieces in "raku" clay to the first class to apply glazes.
Jason is an award winning potter, and pottery shop manager at SCAA. He has many years of experience with raku and other types of firing methods.
